How to Dress Old Money: 10 Timeless Rules for Effortless Elegance

Recently, I had the pleasure of helping a wonderful client build an entire Old Money-inspired capsule wardrobe for his summer holiday in the South of France. Together, we spent a few hours shopping and carefully selected timeless, high-quality pieces in a refined neutral colour palette that could be effortlessly mixed and matched. The result was a cohesive wardrobe that made getting dressed simple, elegant and stress-free.

Seeing my client leave feeling confident, excited for his European getaway and knowing that every item in his suitcase worked perfectly together reminded me why I love what I do. Great style isn't about owning more clothes; it's about owning the rightones.

That experience inspired me to write this article. Whether you're working with a modest budget or investing in luxury pieces, the Old Money aesthetic is achievable with the right approach.

Below, I'm sharing my 10 essential rules for creating an elegant, timeless Old Money wardrobe, whether you're a woman or a man.

Rule #1. Prioritise fit over brands

Nothing elevates an outfit more than clothes that fit perfectly to your unique body type. A well-fitted blazer from a mid-range brand will almost always look better than an ill-fitting designer one.

Rule # 2. Stick to a neutral colour palette

Stick to timeless and natural colours such as navy, white, cream, stone, camel, deep green, brown, black, grey and charcoal. These colours mix effortlessly and always appear refined. You won’t even have to think or guess what to put with what.

You can add pastels colours such as sky blue, blush pink or even burgundy to spice up your wardrobe but avoid flashy or bold colours that will make you appear too cheap.

Rule # 3. Natural fabrics are a must

Natural fibres drape better, feel better on your skin and age beautifully.

You should invest in linen, cotton, wool, cashmere, merino wool, suede and leather.

And avoid shiny synthetic fabrics whenever possible because those ones will emphasize your body odours...

Rule # 4. Buy fewer, better-quality pieces

Instead of owning 20 average shirts (from which you will wear only 2 or 3 anyway), own instead 5 excellent shirts, 2 stunning blazers, 3 great trousers and a few pairs of premium shoes.

Quality is much more noticeable than quantity. And much more cost effective for you since you are really “wearing” what you are owning!

Rule # 5. Wear timeless silhouettes

Timeless style doesn’t chase trends, instead it focus on minimalistic, clean and modern lines.

Choose classics like oxford shirts, structured t-shirts and polo shirts, straight-leg jeans or wide leg pants, chinos, linen trousers or dresses, blazers, suede loafers and leather belts.

These pieces never go out of style.

Rule # 6. Keep logos to a minimum

Because you are not a billboard. Those expensive brands (or not so expensive) are not paying any fee to advertise them! This is why most of the luxury brands such as Ralph Lauren for instance have their most epxensive ranges logo free but their more affordable ones with big huge logos… Think about and connect the dots… One of the hallmarks of old money style is subtlety. Avoid oversized logos, flashy monograms and heavily branded clothing. Let the quality of the garment speak for itself.

Rule # 7. Invest in quality shoes

If there is one area to invest your bucks, is your shoe section. Because not only they make the biggest impression but they gives you the most comfort. If you are uncomfortable in your shoes, it will be seen in your posture and overall appearance.

Loafers, white leather sneakers, brown leather boots or nude kitten heels for women are a must.

Keep them clean and well maintained.

Rule # 8. Accessorise with restraint

For man, choose one or two understated accessories, such as a classic watch, a simple silver bracelet, a quality leather belt or sunglasses with timeless frames.

For women, gold or silver jewellery sets are a must, with bags, scarves and hats.

Accessories are what elevate your outfit so make sure they are visible enough but avoid wearing too many statement pieces at once otherwise it will make your look too noisy.

Rule # 9. Pay attention to grooming

Even the best outfit loses its impact without good grooming.

So you should maintain a neat and modern haircut, healthy skin, a clean shave for men, trimmed or manicured nails, a signature fragrance.

Looking polished is part of the overall impression.

Rule # 10. Dress appropriately for the occasion

True elegance comes from dressing with intention. Wear clothing that suits the setting rather than trying to stand out. Confidence, good posture and ease complete the look far more than expensive labels.

In conclusion you should keep in mind this simple formula: fit before brand, quality before quantity, timeless before trendy, natural fabrics before synthetics and confidence before flashiness.

Following these simple principles will help you create a wardrobe that looks sophisticated year after year regardless of changing fashion trends.
