How a Mother of the Bride or Groom Should Dress for the Wedding

The big day is almost here - your child is getting married, and you, proud mother of the bride or groom, are about to step into the spotlight. You’ll be photographed, hugged, possibly weep uncontrollably, and definitely dance like no one’s watching. But before all that, let’s talk about what you’ll be wearing. Because while it’s their day, you will be immortalized in the wedding album forever, so let’s try to avoid any regrets.

Rule #1: Dress for the Occasion

Let’s be clear: this is not your moment to relive your prom, your Vegas years, or your fantasy of starring in Real Housewives of Nantucket. Yes, you want to look fabulous. And no, you don’t want to wear a plunging neckline with sequins that can signal ships at sea. Think elegant, flattering, and appropriate for the wedding’s level of formality.

If it's a beach wedding, consider a flowing dress in light fabric with flower prints. If it’s a black-tie affair, think long elegant gown or chic cocktail dress. Consider the dress code of the wedding and choose your outfit accordingly.

Rule #2: Choose your colour wisely

Unless the bride specifically told you to stay within a certain palette and wear white at her wedding, you should totally stay clear from this colour. In western culture it’s assumed that all other ladies other than the bride in attendance at the wedding should refrain from wearing white (or even shades of it) to avoid seeming to upstage the bride for focus.

When in doubt, stick with classic wedding colours like navy, plum, sage or dusty rose which will make you look timeless and elegant.

Otherwise, jewels tones like a rich emerald green, a deep ruby red or a striking sapphire blue are not only universally flattering but will add also a touch of sophistication, complementing nicely your position of mother of the bride/groom at the wedding.

Rule #3: Spice Up your Outfit

Remember that jewellery should complement, not compete with your outfit. If your necklace enters the room before you do, it’s way too much. And your purse should be small enough to fit in your hand, not large enough to smuggle out leftover cupcakes!

When choosing your accessories, consider the neckline and style of your dress as well as the wedding dress code. For instance, wear a delicate necklace for a high neckline or statement earrings for a strapless dress.

Also, remember the ultimate sophistication fashion rule “Less is More”. If you choose a large pair of earrings, avoid wearing a matching necklace and bracelet to not make your outfit look too overwhelming.

Rule #4: Dress for your age… But not old!

Dressing up appropriately for your age is the way to go obviously but that doesn’t mean that you must look like an “old lady”. “Modern” doesn’t necessarily mean “Young”. Unfortunately, most of the mother of the groom/bride choose outfits that are not modern, making them look just like an old lady (no offence to anyone). The best way to achieve this is to focus on timeless and “minimalistic” silhouettes, quality fabrics, with minimal accessories, while incorporating current trends in a subtle way. For instance, a mini skirt is age-inappropriate for you but a minimalist navy gown with a trendy hair cut like a wavy bob will make you look modern and stylish.

Rule #5: Comfort is key

Like the bride, you’ll be on your feet all day long. You’ll be dancing, meeting new people, pausing for photos and most importantly chasing down the ring bearer who just mistook the gift table for a snack bar. So, make sure your shoes are walkable, at least until dinner. After that, change for a pair of ballet flats under your table if you want to. Do also a “sit test” in your outfit. If you sit down and can no longer breathe or bend, that’s not fashion. That’s medieval torture.

Final Thoughts

Being the mother of the bride or groom is a joyful, emotional, and yes, fashion-forward role. Dress to feel confident, comfortable, and completely yourself. Remember, no matter what you wear, your love and presence will mean more than any dress ever could. Enjoy the moment, the memories with your family and don’t stress over a dress.
