Most Common Dress Codes Decoded

In fashion, dressing appropriately for different occasions is more than just a style statement. It is an opportunity for you to express your respect for the host but also demonstrate your understanding of cultural and professional references. The way you dress for a particular event can not only enhance your image but also allows you to make a positive impact on those around you and how they perceive you.

I have listed below the 7 most common event dress codes and how to apply them for both men and women:

Casual

Casual dress code is relaxed comfortable and associated with everyday activities or informal gatherings. Your objective here is to look effortlessly chic without sacrificing comfort and practicality.

  • For Men: A pair of well-fitted chinos with a casual or linen button-up shirt and loafers is the perfect combination. Accessories can be minimal, such as a watch and a belt. For a professional event, you should avoid going too casual with a pair of jeans, a T-shirt or polo shirt associated with sneakers.

  • For Women: you should opt for trousers, skirts, or sundresses. A nice blouse or button up shirt, with flat ballerinas, loafers or sandals can complete nicely your look. A structured handbag or crossbody purse will add an elegant touch. Remember also to avoid going too casual with the usual combination: jean, t-shirt and sneakers.

Business Casual

If you are attending a corporate party or networking event, a business casual dress code is most appropriate. Your attire should be a mix between casual and professional items. Your objective is to look more polished than casual wear but without necessarily dressing too formal (e.g. A suit).

  • For Men: A collared shirt (preferably long sleeves) with fitted chinos can be the base of your outfit. Add to this a blazer in different colour of your trousers (if you try to have them in similar colour it would look somehow off). Your accessories should stay minimalistic with only a leather belt and watch. A tie is not required and finally wear polished shoes like monk stripes or loafers to finish your look.

  • For Women: Women can wear silk blouses, button-down shirts, or knit tops paired with dressy pants, pencil or trapeze skirts or pleated A-line dresses. Blazers are a great option to elevate your look. For shoes you have the option between a nice pair of loafers or comfortable kitten heels to add a touch of femininity to your look. Minimalist jewellery and a structured handbag will complete your outfit nicely.

Smart Casual

This dress code is a little more flexible than business casual (which require a blazer or a sport coat with dressy pants). Smart casual allows for more relaxed pieces like chinos, tailored dark jeans, or even t-shirts with a blazer or cardigan, and it offers more room for personal style and colour choice. This dress code is usually required for company events and informal gatherings.

  • For Men: A smart casual look could include a blazer paired with different colour chinos and a button-up casual shirt. You can skip definitely the tie otherwise you would look too formal. Add to these shoes like loafers, boat shoes, ankle boots or even white sneakers. And finish up styling your outfit with a sophisticated watch and a leather belt.

  • For Women: Women can go for a tailored dress, a jumpsuit or a stylish skirt and blouse combination. Always choose natural fabrics to look more polished, like silk, wool, linen and cotton blend. You have the option from a range of shoes, elegant flats, wedges, sandals or kitten heels would be perfect to complete your look. Pair this with simple jewellery, a nice statement clutch or a small, structured handbag and you are now ready to mingle.

Cocktail Attire

Cocktail attire is a semi-formal dress code, falling between business casual and black tie. This dress code is usually requested for evening events, such as parties, weddings, or fundraisers. The objective is to look elegant but not as formal as black tie.

  • For Men: A dark suit paired with a button-down shirt and a tie are the perfect outfit formula. You can opt for a bow tie if you want to make it more formal. For shoes you can opt for elegant, polished dress shoes like monk stripe, oxfords or brogues. Add to this a sophisticated watch and you are ready to go.

  • For Women: Knee-length cocktail dresses are the most common choice, but you can also wear a dressy jumpsuit or a sophisticated separate outfit. Fabrics like silk, satin, or chiffon work well, and the dress can be sleeveless or have sleeves depending on the weather and settings. You can complete your look with polished heels, either strappy sandals or pumps. Again, keep your accessories elegant and simple, with a clutch bag and few jewellery pieces.

Black Tie

The black-tie dress code is one of the most formal dress codes, sitting between cocktail attire and white tie attire. It is required for evening events like galas, weddings or sponsored charity events for instance.

  • For Men: As its name suggest, men are required to wear a tie because this dress code refers initially to the traditional black bow tie worn by men alongside a tuxedo or a dark suit. So, for this type of event, a tuxedo is the expected outfit, which includes a black dinner jacket, a white dress shirt, a black bow tie, and black patent leather shoes. Black tie events often require attention to every detail, so consider cufflinks, a pocket square, and a formal watch. A black dress belt (or no belt) is also a must.

  • For Women: Women should wear a formal evening gown or a sophisticated cocktail dress. The gown can range from floor-length to tea-length, in high quality fabrics like velvet, silk, or satin. You can pair your gown with high heels and sophisticated and minimalist jewellery like diamonds and pearls. And a sleek, elegant clutch would be the perfect finishing touch.

Black Tie Optional

Black tie optional means you can opt for a formal look but are not strictly required to wear a tuxedo or evening gown. This gives you some flexibility, but you still have to achieve a very polished look and pay attention to every detail.

  • For Men: If you don’t want to wear a tuxedo and a bow tie, you can choose a dark suit paired with a tie. A crisp white shirt, dressy shoes and a nice watch will complement nicely your overall outfit.

  • For Women: A formal gown or a sophisticated cocktail dress is still recommended. However, you can either choose to wear heels or dressy flats. Finally, accessories with elegant jewellery and a clutch.

White Tie

White tie is the most formal of all dress codes, often reserved for prestigious events such as royal galas or extremely formal balls.

  • For Men: As it names suggested, you are required to wear a white formal dress shirt with a white bow tie, white waistcoat, a black tailcoat and black formal trousers. For accessories you should opt for patent leather shoes and add a pocket square, formal cufflinks and even white gloves.

  • For Women: Women should wear an evening gown, typically floor-length, and often with gloves. Fabrics should be luxurious (such as satin, velvet, or silk), and the dress should be very formal, with minimal embellishments. Pair with elegant, high heels and a clutch. Don’t forget to have your hair shining and eventually professionally made otherwise a nice French twist bun would be easy and simple for you to achieve.

Final Tips

  • Know the Event Location: Weather, location, and type of event often determine how formal or casual your outfit should be. For instance, a beach wedding may allow more casual attire than an indoor ballroom.
  • Fit is Key: Regardless of the dress code, the fit of your clothes plays a crucial role in looking polished. Tailored clothing always looks more elegant.
  • Confidence: Whatever you wear, confidence is key. Choose an outfit that makes you feel comfortable and elegant, and it will show in how you carry yourself.
